Great Example of Using Influence and Power

I came across this article through Steve Rubel’s Daily Links, and it is a great article about Tony Dungy and Steve Irsay, the owner of the Indianapolis Colts. Both are amazing role models on how to be great stewards of the of power and influence they have been granted.

This is just like Jim Irsay. Nobody would ever know it, but he’s always reaching out to people in need. He never seeks credit for this stuff, in fact he never mentions it. Sometimes he reaches out and writes big checks for people in need. Sometimes he reaches out to call people who have written letters to him. Either way, this is how he operates. He realizes that he has a responsibility to use the position he has been given to help others. And when he sees someone in need and feels his heart moved, he takes action.

Irsay and the Colts are an amazing example how influence and character from the top can quickly affect everyone in the organization. If we could find more leaders like Irsay and Dungy in this world we would not have to worry about anymore corporate scandals.

5 Steps to Gaining Influence

Over at the Leadership Turn Blog there is a great article on how to become an effective influencer. Jonathan maps out 5 steps that he feels are important to gaining influence.

Here are the five main steps to effective influential communication. Make this pattern second nature, leaving you to concentrate on the detail.

Gain Rapport

Be on their level, recognise their beliefs and values; match their behaviour patterns and blend your personality characteristics with theirs.

Ask Questions

Elicit needs and different responses; probe to identify their motives, attitudes and feeling.

Listen Actively

Demonstrate that you are listening: listen with all your senses; suspend judgement.

Stress Pertinent Benefits

Summarise how specific benefits of your proposal accurately reflect their needs.

Work Towards A Decision

Ask questions that will force a decision (or rejection); test interest through hypothetical questions; make positive statements which assume their acceptance.

When I read this I noticed that none of steps had to do with the leader but focused on
understanding those around you. Change is hard when cause is good, but when the change is only focused on benefiting the leader, it is nearly impossible. Seek the opinions of those around you, and it might help you discover something new about your team.

Anyone can make a difference

This quote really made me think about how as a recent college graduate that I still can make an impact. I am lucky that I am working for a company that encourages us to make a difference. As a future leader my goal is to show young people that even though they might not have a lot of experience, they still can make a difference. I believe that this is a big part of being a leader because a lot of people do not see their potential. Like, the mosquito, we can a nice bite too if we know what we can do.

Which comes first: Trusting the Message or the Messenger

Like the chicken and the egg questions, I wonder which needs to comes first. No matter how good the message if you don’t trust the messenger then you will have a hard time trusting the message. Also, once a messenger that you trust burns you with a bad message, your trust in that messenger will be damaged and maybe even lost.

Why becoming a great leader can be challenging

A lot of leadership books talk about similiar actions needed to become a great leader. They talk about creating a vision, engaging and listening to your followers, and implementation. All of these we can do fairly easily with just a couple of bullet points showing us how, but it seems that is not thing we need as a leader. If it was, then there might be a lot more great leaders.

Michael McKinney over at the LeadershipNow Blog wrote a great article about the study of leadership and points out why leadership is more than vision, communication, and implementation.

The study of leadership is not the study of leadership at all, for leadership is the development of an individual’s whole being which is dynamic and ongoing.

There are a lot of great people who can convince a group to go a certain direction, but leaders are people who can do that while understanding what is best for the whole team. There have been so many “great” leaders out there that have fallen into ethical traps because they neglected developing there whole self.

I decided to start a Blog carnival on leadership development. The first edition will be posted Febraury 17th and articles are due by the 15th.
