Simply Successful Secrets/Business Lessons

I came across a great post from Steve at All Things Workplace about the Lessons he learned from business, and I thought I would create my list of what I have learned in a short time in the workplace. As I researched his post and looked back at some of his links I discovered this is spreading like the meme awhile back. I really encourage anyone new to te workplace or about to graduate in get into the workplace to go back and look at some of other bloggers lessons and tips they have learned. There is a lot of wisdom in these posts.

The lessons I have learned in my short time in Business

Understand what is important: I got married in July and started my first job in September and the challenge for me was to realize what was truly important in my life. My job might not always be there, but my wife will always be there loving me. She needs to know the same from me.

Read: Read everything you can get your hands on. The great thing is now of days is that you have tons knowledge at your fingertips without any costs because of the great bloggers out there. Take advantage of the knowledge and wisdom people are sharing.

Be true to yourself: At first I thought I was hear to please everyone, but I realized I am hear to be honest and authentic and if you are not honest and authentic to yourself how can you be to others?

Have fun and love: Life is short enjoy it. Live life like you are going to die because we are all going to someday.

Share: Even though I am very young with little life experience I feel like it is my duty to share what I learn through this blog like others have shared to me. Plus the more I share, the more I realize I do not know.

The Power of Vulnerability

Life is full of paradoxes and the power vulnerability is another one I believe. As I was about to write this post about vulnerability, my rss reader came across this post over at The Recovering Leader blog that says pretty much what I was thinking.

The greatest collaborations are based on shared vulnerability. Opening your mind and heart to others enables you to match your challenges and ambitions with theirs — and find the common ground needed to do great things together. Keep yourself guarded, and others will respond in kind — which hinders all but superficial success. Leadership requires the courage to make yourself vulnerable before others you want to inspire or guide, and anyone with whom you intend to create something of lasting value. When you act authentically with those who are – or may be – important to you, they will reciprocate, and be moved to do their best work.

One of the challenges to being vulnerable is continuing to be vulnerable and authentic after the first time being burned by someone. In my favorite leadership books, “Five Temptations of a CEO”, by Peter Lencioni, the fifth temptation a leader falls into is choosing invulnerability over trust. We strive so hard to stay in our “comfort zone,” but it is outside this zone that we see real growth. It is through the acknowledgement of our weaknesses and finding ways others can compliment you, and you compliment them, that we can find success and growth. Without being willing to step out of that “comfort zone” of being vulnerable comes “yes men” and disconnect because of the fear others might have of what they say and do.

Simon Cowell and Honesty

Tonight I was watching an interview with Simon Cowell on 60 Minutes, and he said some stuff that is interested me. He admitted to not being able to sing and not having a real musical talent. Then he ernt on about one time a couple offered him $100,000 to come and critique them in bed.

Why would someone offer him that much money for something he is not an “expert” at come to sing in front of him even though he can’t produce or sing? It is because he is honest. Even though I do not agree with the way he puts people down, it is very important to be honest with the people.

People talk about how they do not want to be a “yes man,” but people are so desperate for it that they will go look for anyone to give it to them. As we see on American Idol, honesty can lead to prevent further mistakes and make better decisions, but without it can lead a lot of bad decisions.

Great leaders seek honest feedback. Without it, they running blind because they are nearly running with a wall in their face. It is feedback that turns that wall into a window, and you will be able to clearly see ahead of you.

Which comes first: Trusting the Message or the Messenger

Like the chicken and the egg questions, I wonder which needs to comes first. No matter how good the message if you don’t trust the messenger then you will have a hard time trusting the message. Also, once a messenger that you trust burns you with a bad message, your trust in that messenger will be damaged and maybe even lost.

Why becoming a great leader can be challenging

A lot of leadership books talk about similiar actions needed to become a great leader. They talk about creating a vision, engaging and listening to your followers, and implementation. All of these we can do fairly easily with just a couple of bullet points showing us how, but it seems that is not thing we need as a leader. If it was, then there might be a lot more great leaders.

Michael McKinney over at the LeadershipNow Blog wrote a great article about the study of leadership and points out why leadership is more than vision, communication, and implementation.

The study of leadership is not the study of leadership at all, for leadership is the development of an individual’s whole being which is dynamic and ongoing.

There are a lot of great people who can convince a group to go a certain direction, but leaders are people who can do that while understanding what is best for the whole team. There have been so many “great” leaders out there that have fallen into ethical traps because they neglected developing there whole self.

The “Golden Rule” of Leadership

I remember back in pre-school I was taught the ‘Golden Rule’ that “we should treat others as we would like to be treated.” As a kid we could be harsh and mean to others without even thinking of the affects it could cause.

Grace at A Passionate Life for Christ Blog posts about her thoughts about being a leader and brings up a good point about the role of gentleness and respect in a leader’s feedback.

If I think you’re wrong or you’re doing something stupid, then I will not hesitate to tell you that what you’re doing is wrong or stupid. But I know that I need to do it with gentleness and respect because that’s how I want other people when they rebuke me or criticize me.. If I know for sure that this person truly know me, loves me, and only rebuke me out of love, then there is no problem for me to accept his/her critique and reflect upon it. But if I don’t even know this person and all in a sudden s/he starts criticizing me, I will probably just ignore him.. And based on this, I know that I need to treat other people the way I want to be treated… With gentleness and respect.

We do not always know the people that we lead especially in the business setting where people come and go from jobs all the time, which make it difficult to give feedback. As a follower we seek and deserve feedback, but as the leader we need to ask first, “Will the feedback help them grow?” and, “How can I present it to them in a gentle way?”

Many times I have run into leaders and managers who give feedback in order to lift themselves up and not the ones they lead. This is not a way I want to be treated, so why would I do the same to those that I lead? I hope for respect and gentleness from others, and the others around you probably seek the same.
