Empowerment – Soaring Above Others

“Let me pass, I have to follow them, I am their leader.” – Alexandre Ledru-Rollin

I love this quote! Leaders all over, wish they had this problem. Great leaders develop and empower the people around so that the leader can watch the accomplishments of those around them and be there when they need help. The leader is not there to dictate every little move others make, but there to help them see the big picture and priorities.

Ken Blanchard talks about empowerment in terms of ducks and eagles. Great leadership produces eagles because they can soar above everyone else. Bad leadership produces ducks because they only “quack” what they are told.

Are those around you quacking or soaring?

The eagle is an excellent symbol of leadership. It flies high above surveying all that is below but with an eye for detail. When it spots its target it dives swiftly into the detail before returning to survey the bigger picture.

I think it’s true, a true leader also knows how to follow. How can you lead if you’ve never followed.

Every great leader I’ve ever coached is surrounded by people who act. They act because you expect them to act. Empowering people is one of the 8 principles in my latest book, Motivate like a CEO. Read more on http://www.thepowerspeakerblog.com

Most of this is recycled language that I have heard for years from many leadership consultants. I was about to decide there was nothing new for my people to listen to. I did find this DynamicBuna that I am impressed with and keeping an eye on http://dynamicbuna.com/

Great quote and great post! It is very possible to have more leaders being developed then needed, it just starts with building a strong foundation. I had an opportunity to do this on a couple of occasions but it does take a lot of work in the beginning. It feels great when other locations are looking to your location for most of the available promotions. Thanks for sharing!
