Leadership Quote – Character v. Reputation

“Be more concerned with your character than with your reputation. Your character is what you really are while your reputation is merely what others think you are.”
–John Wooden

Lately, I have been reading and listening a lot about developing your personal brand. John Wooden has an amazing point here in this quote that really made me reflect on what to focus on when creating a personal brand. If we focus on our character first, our reputation will change. It might take time and effort, but I believe it can change. We focus so much on what is on our outside that we sometimes forget our inside can reflect on our outside as loudly as, or even louder than what our outsides project.

This is one of my goals for this year to focus on my character and to put on the right path. There are many times when I have a hard time staying on the path because I think it is easier to veer off of it.

Mitch Joel talks about personal branding on The Engaging Brand Podcast and points out that there are 3 conversations we need to have.

1) One to Ourself
2) One to One Conversation
3) One to Many

If you can get the first correct then I believe the others will quickly follow.
